Flulia (pronounced Flu-lia) is the nickname of Australian artist Fiona Cassidy Clinton. Flulia has always had a passion for nature. She remembers days spent lying in the grass and looking up at the clouds as though the flowers and long blades of grass had folded over and enveloped her and she had become one of the tiny beetles or bugs whose little lives she was fascinated by. Whether through her LetterArt, CardArt or her CommissionArt, Flulia’s images are designed to evoke visions of daydreams and to tell the story of nature’s beauty.

To create her works she uses a combination of Staedtler Fineliners and Derwent Pastel Pencils, “I love my old Derwent sets of Pastel Pencils (before they changed the formula). They are so chalky I can smudge them and get them all over my fingers. It’s almost like finger painting with chalk! And, the Staedtler Fineliner pens give such a vibrant pigment and have such a teeny tiny nib for the inclusion of minute details”. Her ideas/visual artistry take three forms at the moment with her LetterArt series, her CardArt series and her CommissionArt.

In addition to her LetterArt, she also produces a range of black and white gift cards: CardArt . You can even colour them in to make them your own! Note that cards are blank inside.

Flulia’s commission pieces are usually made up of her LetterArt, but sometimes a client has a love of a particular animal and wishes to feature this animal on a larger scale. “I love to talk to my clients and design a piece just for them. These pieces take a very long time to do but I find them so enjoyable. I find it fantastic when viewing pictures of animals with my clients and often it is an animal that they have overlooked or initially dismissed as ugly that turns out to be their favourite. Often nature surprises us and adds beauty where you least expect it, like in the purple and blue foliage of a vulture!”
