Art Crush!

I have a full-blown art crush on Peter Callesen! Look at his work. Wish I could do this. How clever.

I’ve always loved paper and I used to work in a paper store. Making arty, crafty things is great fun and it was my job! Oh, and constantly re-arranging the wrapping paper. Beautiful, colourful, flocked wrapping paper…The stuff dreams are made of!

My favourite things to make were the giant colour wheels and the tissue pom poms. They took a long time but they were worth it!

I can’t imagine how much time it would take Peter to do a piece like this. Do you like his work too?

How much is that doggie?

Everyone needs a mascot! Well, maybe just some company. Look at these guys. These guys keep me company in my studio. Hugo, the one on the left, is much bigger than Lil. They were made by artist Elodie Bsrker. Great name for an artist who makes dogs. I bought them from Potoroo but Potoroo has closed now. I’m in mourning.

Anyway, Hugo and Lil keep me company when I’m drawing. Sometimes I even talk to them although my cat Tessie (she’s real) gets super jealous when I do.

I can’t find a website for Elodie so check out some more photos of her dogs at the Art At Heart blog.

Elodie also makes cute little chickens. I want to get a big mother chicken and three little chicks. They’re on my wish list for christmas. Have at them here at The Jam Factory website.

Ideas Diary 2

Another Ideas Diary photo. I’m kind of obsessed with animals and the ocean. I love the salt-spray wind that tugs at your hair when you’re by the sea. The gulls crying in the distance and how you can just see forever right to the horizon. It’s like you can look right off the world.

That’s what the picture on the left is about. It’s about trying to capture all those things. Taking you to the ocean but without you having to brush the wind knots out of your hair afterwards!

The pic on the right is a bit darker. The inspiration for this was a dream that I had about snakes. I know some people hate snakes but I don’t. They give me this strange feeling halfway between fright and fascination.

I saw one the other day when I was riding along the river. I’d stolen Rob’s bike and was going for a pedal. It was a huge tiger snake and it was trying to cross the path. There it was. I just stopped peddling, I couldn’t help it. I held my breath in my mouth and the bike, with me on top, just sailed right past it.

Ideas Diary

Hello again!

So, I thought I’d put some pictures up of my visual diary. Getting ideas down is important. You can find inspiration anywhere and you never know when or where the lightening will strike. I’ve had ideas when I’m in the shower, on the tram, in the car, on the phone. Always, always when I should be working (I do have a day job) and even…that’s right…the loo!

Now, in some of these places it’s really hard to find a pen so you have to try to memorise. Turf all the other nonessentials from your brain and put those ideas down on paper. Get rid of all the stuff you don’t need in your head. Hmmm…Do you really need your best friends home number from 1992? That’s right, chuck it! What else? What are the things that you still have in your brain that you don’t need? Rob just told me that he still has all his old PIN numbers in his head. Get rid of them Rob!

Leave a comment and tell me what you have cluttering up your brain space.

Something fishy.

Here is The Fisher Queen. She was inspired by my love of all things ethereal. She is a dreamy, watery vision that is delicate but her strength is conveyed through her eyes. Women are fragile yet strong; whether poised atop precariously high heels or standing tough in dusty work boots they are beautiful. Birds of prey have similar attributes, they are light and delicate but also possess amazing strength and beauty. The bird sitting on her palm is an Azure Kingfisher (Alcedo Azurea).
